The Sale That Almost Got Away: How WhatsApp Cart Recovery Works
"Around 70% of online shopping carts are abandoned before checkout is complete. WhatsApp Cart Recovery automatically follows up with a friendly, personal message — not a nagging email — to bring those customers back."
If you've ever looked at your Whizzly dashboard and noticed started checkouts that never converted, you've seen cart abandonment in action.
A customer adds your product to their cart. They get to the checkout page. Then they stop. Maybe their phone rang. Maybe they wanted to double-check their card details. Maybe they just got distracted by something shinier. Whatever the reason, they closed the tab and didn't come back.
This happens to every online shop. The question is whether you have a system to win some of those customers back — or whether you just accept the loss.
WhatsApp Cart Recovery is that system.
Why WhatsApp Recovery Works Better Than Email
Most e-commerce platforms offer email-based cart recovery. You've probably received these yourself: a stiff, templated email with a photograph of the item you left behind and a subject line like "You forgot something!"
They work — email cart recovery does generate sales. But WhatsApp recovery works better for several reasons:
Open rates: WhatsApp messages have an open rate of 90%+ within the first few hours. Marketing emails average around 20%.
Personal feel: A WhatsApp message feels like a message from a person, not a system. Even if the customer knows it's automated, the channel itself carries a warmth that email doesn't.
Direct response: The customer can reply directly, ask a question, or request help — and your response lands right back in the same thread.
No spam filters: WhatsApp messages don't get caught in promotions tabs or spam folders.
How the Recovery Flow Works
- Customer abandons checkout: They've started the checkout process (entered their details or indicated intent to buy) but haven't completed payment
- Trigger window: You set how long Whizzly waits before sending a recovery message. Default is 1 hour — long enough that they've clearly not coming back on their own, short enough that they still remember the product
- Recovery message: A WhatsApp message is sent from your business number. It references the specific item they were looking at, their name if provided, and includes a direct link back to their saved cart
- Optional discount: You can optionally include a small incentive code in the recovery message ("Here's 10% off if you'd like to complete your order — SAVE10") — though this isn't always necessary
What the Message Looks Like
The default template looks something like this (and you can customise it entirely):
"Hey [Name]! 👋 Noticed you were looking at [Product Name] earlier — just wanted to check if you had any questions or if anything put you off? Your basket is still saved: [Cart Link]. Happy to help if you need anything! 😊"
Warm. Personal. Non-pushy. An invitation to continue, with an open door to ask questions rather than a hard sell.
One Message, Not a Campaign
We send one recovery message per abandoned cart. Not two. Not a sequence of three "LAST CHANCE" escalating messages. One friendly follow-up.
We believe in treating customers the way you'd want to be treated — and a barrage of sales messages after an abandoned checkout is not that.
What to Expect
Cart recovery isn't magic. Not every abandoned cart will convert. But for a proportion of them, the gentle nudge — the reminder that the product is still there, that a real person noticed — does make a difference. The effect is real and measurable in your dashboard.
