The Little Upgrade That Makes a Big Impression: Gift Notes & Packaging Upgrades

There's a moment when a customer receives a beautifully packaged order — when the box is opened, the tissue paper is folded just so, the handwritten note reads something warm and personal — that turns a purchase into a memory.

They photograph it. They share it. They come back.

The Gift Notes & Packaging Upgrades powerup exists to help you create more of those moments — and yes, to help you earn more from doing so.

What It Adds to Your Checkout

When enabled, a dedicated section appears during your checkout flow:

"Is this a gift? Add a personal touch."

Customers can:

  1. Add a handwritten gift note: A text field where they type their message (you print it or handwrite it with their order slip)
  2. Choose a packaging upgrade: You define the options and prices. Common examples:
  3. - Standard packaging (Free)
  4. - Gift-wrapped with tissue paper & ribbon (+£2.50)
  5. - Premium gift box with wax seal (+£5.00)
  6. - Luxury hamper presentation (+£8.00)
  7. Mark as a gift: Removes price information from the packing slip

Why This Works So Well

It captures a real need: A significant percentage of online orders are gifts. By offering gift options explicitly, you reduce friction for buyers who were going to add a note anyway — and you make yourself the obvious choice over a competitor who doesn't offer it.

It's a genuine upsell: Packaging upgrades are one of the few upsells that actually add real value for the customer, not just for the merchant. People happily pay £3–£8 for packaging they're proud to give.

It builds brand memory: The recipient of a beautifully packaged gift remembers where it came from. That's word-of-mouth you didn't have to orchestrate.

Business Types This Works Best For

This powerup is particularly well-suited to:

  • Candle and homeware brands: Gifting is a core use case
  • Artisan food shops: Christmas hampers, celebration boxes, corporate gifting
  • Jewellery and accessories: Premium presentation is part of the product
  • Skincare and beauty: Gift sets, birthday treats, self-care moments
  • Florists: Adding notes to bouquets or delivery arrangements

It's less relevant for takeaways and functional product shops, where gifting is a smaller percentage of orders.

What You Need to Do Operationally

When an order comes in with a gift note or upgrade selected, your Whizzly dashboard and WhatsApp order notification will flag it clearly:

⭐ Gift Order — Packaging: Premium Gift Box • Note: "Happy birthday Mum! Love you loads"

You'll need packaging supplies on hand for each tier you offer. We recommend keeping it simple to start — two tiers maximum until you understand the demand.
